Tacoma on Strike

My internship has certainly been off to an interesting start... Though, I must say, I do not mind it at all. The strike has been an incredibly unique experience, though, of course, this experience has been entirely "from the outside looking in", as it is not my place to actually participate.

After one week of the strike and no resolution, you kind of have to be in awe of the gumption of those teachers, particularly after they declared the intent to remain on strike when the judge ordered them back. Of course, considering I am going to school to become a teacher, it concerns me that the legality of teachers striking in Washington State seems to be of some uncertainty, which makes me all the more interested in how this situation will turn out. But I've said it once and I'll say it again: good for them for doing what they need to do, especially when it's difficult.

That said... I miss those kids more than I thought I would!

First backpack hike

Ben, Mowgli and I trekked a mile with fully loaded backpacks (to get me used to the weight, before we get to Europe) on the Duckabush trail. It would have been more enjoyable if it truly had been "easy" and "flat" like the park ranger claimed... Instead, to get back from the waterfall, I had to drag myself up an incline worthy of San Fransisco.
